About
Rachel Teannalach is a Boise-based landscape painter working primarily in oils and mixed media. Originally from northern New Mexico, she lived and painted in Marin County before making her home in Idaho in 2008. Teannalach earned a Bachelor of Arts Cum Laude in Fine Arts from Scripps College (Claremont, CA). She also studied at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, and Art Centers International in Florence, Italy. While at the Claremont Colleges, she studied primarily with painter Enrique Martinez Celaya at Pomona College, from whom she received the Booker Prize in Painting.
Teannalach’s style is characterized by bold, untouched brushstrokes that evoke the emotional quality of landscape. She is known for both her small scale "tinyExpanse" daily paintings, as well as her large scale landscapes. Teannalach’s work is guided by the belief that the observation of nature’s beauty restores our sense of belonging in and responsibility to the natural world. For Teannalach, painting provides a way to step out of the frenzy that life so easily becomes. Her work leaves, in the words of W.B. Yeats, “a little space for the rose-breath to fill.”
Teannalach’s focus over the last several years has been collaborations with conservation organizations, supporting their efforts to preserve the lands she loves to paint. In 2014 she helped the Idaho Conservation League establish their Artist in Residence program, and from 2018-2021 she worked with Advocates for the West to promote their efforts to restore the Pacific Salmon migration in a project titled “Confluence.”
Teannalach is represented by Capitol Contemporary Art in Boise, and Echo Arts in Bozeman. Her work has been featured on Pottery Barn, Serena and Lily, and One King’s Lane. She has received commissions from the City of Ketchum and Sun Valley Resort, the City of Boise, and Saint Alphonsus Medical Center. Her work is collected widely throughout the United States.
